Sadly, a lot of health "tips" become published in respected publications, spread throughout blogs and word of mouth before anyone has really checked if they came from a reliable source. Here are 5 health "tricks" that harm more than help: No Red Meat: You might get a judgmental eye when you order a steak, but substantial research has been done to try and find the damages done by small quantities of red meat, and no such damage could be found. As a matter of fact, consuming moderate amounts of red meat is important because it gives your body nutrients such as Vitamin D, B12, iron and those wonderful high amount of protein. Cut the Coffee: There's a reason I'm a zombie the moment I wake up and am singing along with Michael Buble by the time I get in the car: coffee (I don't care that the other drivers who can hear me probably think I need to Google "Los Angeles singing lessons"). So I do not want to quit the stuff. Turns out I don't have to! Research has shown that daily coffee consumers have a 41% lower risk of developing liver cancer and other liver complications. Maybe for the sake of others I should look up a voice coach in Los Angeles though… Brush after every bite: Don't want to be the weirdo brushing their teeth in the bathroom at work on your lunch break? You don't have to be! The truth is, since our mouth is moving so much throughout the day between eating lunch and snacks, visiting that water cooler, and taking business calls and meetings, it doesn't have time to let bacteria assimilate. Wear sunscreen all the time: Many people resist the idea that this is detrimental for them but, it's been shown that wearing excessive sunscreen can build up aluminum levels in the body. Research has found an association between high levels of mercury and an increased risk of developing melanoma and other skin conditions. Spend a lot of time outside? Could be good to invest in one of those country club, floppy sun hats. Eat fish all the time: It's true that those oils do wonders for your skin, hair and heart, but beware of all that mercury. Who doesn't love having a quick meal from a can? Most of us have towers of tuna in our pantry, and most of us love to go to nice sushi dinners with our friends. But, too much of it can be detrimental to your memory, nervous system and even your ability to have children.
