When you have driven for any length of time, you might think of yourself as being a good driver. It is likely you cannot imagine a time when you were not able to drive and you probably drive now without much thinking. This may include a number of bad habits which you may not be conscious of until it is too late. Furthermore, since many of us drive pretty much unconsciously is a danger in itself. You may have been through occasions when you were driving and realized you don't remember actually driving. If you develop a number of advanced driving skills, you will be able to minimize some of the bad habits that you may have developed over the years. One skill that is definitely important is learning to drive in various road conditions. Situations of the road are based on weather and kind of road. When the weather turns bad on you, like snow or thick fog, it can become very stressful for you if you are not used to it. In such situations, your developed driving abilities would come into play if you suddenly went into a skid. If you were driving automatically, would you recognize which way to steer the car? This is something you can be trained in and could save your life and the lives of your loved ones. The complications of coping with an unpredicted situation on the road is your initial reaction. A second danger is usually that you begin to stress and panic and this is one of the reasons you should learn how to deal with a car that encounters ice or drives through flood water for example. Any time you learn these abilities effectively, you will be able to act in response correctly to these situations without thinking too much. Information on how to deal with unsafe situations can be found on the internet but you are better off going to a class or trainer to teach you first hand on how it is done. One more area which might be classified as a high level skill can be driving defensively. If driving defensively, you are usually keeping an eye on the other drivers close to you so that you can anticipate any mistakes on their part. For instance, people might cross lanes without turning on their blinkers or they speed up and overtake in the wrong spot. Just how you position yourself on the road, how you use your mirrors and being aware of blind spots are examples of being defensive. You would think that advanced driving skills involves driving fast and intensely. Nonetheless, enhanced driving skills are relevant to driving safely and driving confidently.
