When it comes to business energy usage, the experts believe that each workplace could save around 20 per cent each month. If you're up for this challenge, it's time to figure out whether money and energy could be saved for your business.

1. Give your workplace a lighting makeover. Just by leaving an illuminated light bulb on continuously can waste as much as £;50 annually? It's possible to give a studio, factory or office a quick makeover with just a few energy saving measures. The first step is always to switch your old bulbs to compact fluorescent ones; Working just as well as the incandescent predecessors, these bulbs have a lower energy usage. Next, install motion sensored lights so that you and your staff never have to worry about accidentally leaving on the lights at the end of the day.

2. Scare off phantom loads. Here's another tidbit of trivia for you: Did you know that when you turn off your desktop computer, monitor, or printer, it may not really be "off"? This is because many manufacturers design office equipment and electronics to carry a phantom power load when switched off that makes them quicker to turn back on. A simply way to ensure that power isn't wasted is to have all the accessories and computers in a power switch which at the end of the day can be turned off. This also makes it easy to turn these pieces of equipment back on when you settle in to work the next day.

3. Use two degrees of separation. One of the nice things about being able to work indoors is having a climate-controlled environment that makes the job more comfortable. However, at the peak of summer or winter, those comforts can get expensive as the cost of energy rises and you tend to use more of it. To curb your heating and cooling costs, adjust the thermostat by just two degrees, which won't make much of a difference in the comfort of your office environment but will make a big impact on your energy savings.

4. Go paperless. There are a number of costs involved in the office, and thanks to paper, toner and electricity printing can be a large portion. Join the digital age by going paperless and communicating all important information by company email. Archives and email inboxes that are searchable save time and energy so that each member of your team knows where an important memo can be seen.

5. Get employee participation. As with everything, these methods to save energy will work when used by the full team. It's crucial to speak to all of your employees to tell them how important energy saving is to both the success of the environment and your company to get them on board. By making things related to incentives you can get a lot done, and employee participation rewards can be initiated to save energy.
