In recent years, it has become fashionable to ask guest speakers to address delegates at conferences, functions, team building events and business meetings. It is generally hoped that they would inspire their listeners and motivate them to better themselves, examine their own attitudes and resolve to embrace new values. Speakers come from many different walks of life, but sports speakers seem to be the most popular. Successful athletes belong to their communities and their countries. Their achievements are shared by all and sunder and entire communities and countries experience feelings of pride, joy and self worth when their athletic representatives achieve on their behalf. This is why sportspeople are such popular motivational sports speakers. A wealthy businessman or rehabilitated criminal does not belong to everybody, but a sports hero does. In order to achieve the highest rungs of any sports ladder, some common attributes are necessary. All successful athletes are ambitious, the work extremely hard, they never lose sight of their goals, they accept failures and they carry on. Athletes are team players and they have to strive to continual improvement. They can never rest on their laurels and they never give up on their dreams. It is these attributes that can inspire, teach and motivate. Cynics argue that sportspeople have no message to convey because they simply took advantage of their god given talent and that their message is therefore irrelevant to most other people. However, nothing can be further from the truth. The best attributes of successful athletes will ensure success in any field. By learning from the intense dedication of sports speakers, ordinary people can realize that, by applying the same principle, they too can achieve the pinnacle of their own field. Most sport achievers are used to be in the public eye and they regularly have to express themselves at press conferences, televisions interviews and other public events. That is why many athletes are good motivational speakers. Those that are not good public speakers nevertheless convey their passion and this endears them to their audiences. The high profile maintained by athletes also makes them popular by default. Event planners that invite prominent sportspeople to make keynote addresses know that this fact alone can make the event itself a huge success. Because they are so popular as speakers, most sportspeople work though an agent. Cynics point out that they are well rewarded for their efforts and that they are marketed aggressively by their agents. There may be some truth in this, but it is certainly the end result that is important, and that is to motivate and inspire delegates. Perhaps the biggest advantage in asking a sports hero to address an event is the fact that they have general appeal. Their support base is not limited to specific target groups, a limitation experienced by most other categories of public speakers. Sports achievers have an extremely diverse base of support and they are able to bring their message across to people from just about any demographic definition. In the modern world it seems as if the icons are all superficial people that employ notoriety as the basis for fame. In contrast to this sordid world of celebrities, sports people are beacons of healthy living, wholesome values and genuine achievement. This is why sport speakers can really make a difference, why they are successful in setting an example and in motivating people to chase their dreams.
