The final tourism numbers from the 2011 calendar year were released late last week by the Mauritian government to mixed reviews. On the positive side, the island saw a growth of 3.1% over 2010 with more than 964,000 visitors coming in. On the other hand, it was lower than the forecast growth which had hoped to see 980,000 arrivals. Government officials blamed the lower-than-expected numbers on a still sluggish European economy. While Mauritius enjoyed tremendous growth from China equal to 98.9% over 2010, the UK fell off by about 10%. The UK and France typically combine to provide nearly 70% of all travellers who visit Mauritius, so any fall-off in either market usually has a significant impact on the total number of arrivals. Overall the news is very good because it portends a better 2012. Government officials see no reason why Mauritius can't see 5% growth this year to bring the total number of arrivals over 1 million. Throughout Europe the Ministry of Tourism has been heavily promoting Mauritius luxury holidays and other opportunities on the island. They've also worked hard to reach out to more niche markets including golf and other sports. As an example, two noteworthy golf tournaments s were held last year with much success. The 2012 golf season kicks off with a pro-am event planned for March. Sun seekers looking forward to visiting the palm fringed shores of Mauritius in 2012 will find the tourism sector to have been hard at work. For example, the LUX brand of hotels and resorts has arrived this year with the takeover of three of Mauritius' most notable properties. In addition, construction is under way on at least two new hotels scheduled open before the end of the year. Guests will also notice a concerted effort by the Martian government to improve infrastructure and accessibility -- even off resort property. Finally, there is a concerted effort under way to promote tourism in Mauritius among the Mauritian people themselves. Not as customers, but as investors. Government officials and private sector businesses are encouraging more locals to be involved through financial contributions. As more native Mauritians get on board with the program their contributions are transforming the whole environment of the tourism industry. They are adding a local flair in terms of culture, design, atmosphere, and so on. Hopefully the effort helps the Indian Ocean island reached its arrival goals for 2012. There are still plenty of last-minute holiday deals available in Mauritius before the winter is out. This is the best time to head to paradise if you're currently locked down in the miserable winter weather.
