The subject of web hosting can be a sensitive one for some, but for others it can be an endless search. When you are first stating out, you may need to find a low cost web host to provide the most basic of services, but you may even be looking for free web hosts at that point. Whether this is the case or not, you should be considering it, especially if you have funding that would be better spent on other aspects of your business. If you choose to go with free web hosts, then understand that there are some drawbacks, even if they are not major. Some of these drawbacks include the difference between shared and dedicated hosting, which could make or break the entire deal. If you choose to go with a free host for your website, then you will most certainly be dealing with shared hosting unless you have a friend in the data industry. When you are working with shared hosting you will literally be sharing a server with a number of different people. That number could be anywhere from ten people to one hundred or even more if the server supports it. As a result, you will not have full access to the available resources on the sever, and you certainly will not have root access. Other drawbacks might include the lack of plugin support, for instance shockwave. Java and CSS support might also be limited, which means your site will either have to be very basic, or built using a proprietary website creation tool that is either web based or local. In some cases, the free option will actually demand that you use their creation tool so that the size and content of your website can be controlled. Before you dedicate your time and energy to any free web host, it is important to check whether or not they support upgrading to the next package, or if the next package is even worth your time. If you find that neither of these are true, then will they allow you to download your website and take it elsewhere? Better yet, will your website actually work on another hosting provider? These are definitely questions that you will need to start asking. As you can see, it is not particularly easy to find a free web host, or at least find one that can suit your needs as you grow. Consider this carefully before you commit to a provider, and most importantly, don't waste your time on a half rate web host.
