Keeping personal and professional domain names separate on the web begins and ends with domain registration. When web addresses for both private and public websites are too similar, then private and public communication may inadvertently cross. When using the web and social media, private web addresses must be kept separate from public web addresses in order to maintain the business owner's professional image. Separate domains for both professional and personal websites are essential. If a person's name is too similar to the business name, then clients who look for an online business might be led to private photos of children or other family members. Registering separate and distinctive domain names will ensure that clients are not shown materials that aren't relevant to the business product or service. Many people keep both private and occupational blogs. The domain names for professional blogs should be completely different from names for personal blogs. For instance, if both sites are on WordPress, then bloggers should ensure that the web addresses are distinctive enough that clients will not be misdirected to a private blog. Clients want information about products and services, but they probably have no interest in what business owners write on their private blogs. Social media is another place that requires a boundary between the private and the occupational. Clients will enjoy receiving information about a discount or coupon via Facebook, but they have no desire to see the business owner's latest personal YouTube video. By creating distinctive social media domains or by differentiating between private and occupational social media websites, owners will ensure that their image remains intact. Business owners should ensure that they register unique domain names. If "yourname.com" is the private web address and "yourname.net" is the professional web address, then many clients may find themselves visiting the owner's personal website. For this reason, business site web addresses must be very different from private site web addresses. Also, if users maintain inactive business web addresses, they should ensure that those do not redirect back to private pages. Some business owners use different social media outlets for different purposes. For example, some business owners conduct private conversations on Facebook and public conversations via Twitter. Other business owners use LinkedIn for occupational updates and Facebook for updating friends and family. Either way, using completely separate services ensures that neither private nor public contacts are ever misdirected. Business owners should take precautions when they use Facebook. Maintaining distinct occupational and private domains is crucial for confidentiality and professionalism. Business owners should set up a private Facebook domain for themselves and a separate web address for their business. When choosing Friends, business owners should recommend that clients "Like" their business page instead of accepting clients as Friends on a private page. In today's widely integrated world, drawing the line between private and occupational information is more crucial than ever before. Domain registration is a key component of maintaining professionalism. Business owners may lose important clients and valuable sales dollars if they don't carefully draw a line between public and private communication.
