Farmers markets were created to meet the needs of local farmers and consumers. These markets are normally outside. Here farmers can sell their fresh, natural, or organic produce. They also sell beef, ham, poultry and other local breeds of meat. They also sell homemade cheese and fresh eggs. Sometimes you can also find things like milk fresh from the cow. You can get fresh jam, preserves, pickles, etc. from your local market. They also sell non food items that are hand made.

When you buy from these markets you are helping all farmers continue farming. You can learn about the culture of the town that has these markets that you are visiting. When you buy from this type of market you are helping to preserve the farmland. Preserving farmland helps our environment stay healthy. Local farmers markets help create activity in your community.

When you go to a local farmers market you help your community by buying from your local farmers. You can also build stronger ties to your community and neighbors when you support you local farmers in any way. Whether you are buying, selling, or just promoting will help your local farmers and their families. There are different rules and regulations for these markets in ever state. There are 20 rules that usually apply for all of these markets in the United States. You can go to The National Aglaw Center`s website for rules and regulations.

Here is a list of some of the best farmers markets in the United States.

- Portland Market: Has about 250 vendors dairy farms, bakeries, and nurseries.
- Boulder Colorado Market: Has a steady supply of free range meats, jams, eggs, seeds, and flowers.
- Savannah Georgia Market: They now accept food stamps to keep food available in to their community.
- Austin Texas Market: They have a variety of organic produce and foods.
- San Francisco`s Market: They have fresh seafoods, fruits, and vegetables.
- New York's Market: Has 44 markets and has become the city's flagship farmers market.

If you are tired of the artificial lighting in supermarkets and produce picked before ripening to perfection, head for your local farmers market this week. You will be rewarded by a symphony of shapes, colors, and textures of gorgeous fruits and vegetables. Natural light heightens the appeal of the stunning food. Overall, farmers markets are a perfect stop during the holidays; but are equally wonderful any time of year. Make a festive fruit basket for your table and have fun eating it after you look at it. Have your kids help with the arrangement. This will entice them to eat more healthy fruit.
