Moving is something that nobody looks forward to doing. It takes days of hard labor and weeks of planning to accomplish this feat, and that's not even counting the emotional tolls of transferring to a new place. Even so, most people underestimate the amount of time that it will take to go through all of the motions required to move. One can't simply wait until a few days before a proposed move and have everything go without a hitch. You should allow up to eight weeks for planning and preparation. If this seems excessive, then you are likely forgetting a handful of things that you will have to do before leaving your old home. There are many aspects of a move you may not be considering. The first thing that a mover must do before packing up is to create a budget, or at least have some sense of what will be spent on the trip. Some of the potential expenses include storage boxes, gasoline, and company fees to be moved. Research should also be done pertaining to your new neighborhood and companies so you know how much you will be paying. Physical items are not all that you have to worry about; you also need to foreword mail, move prescriptions, and take care of school information. The DMV needs a record of address, and bills need to be forwarded as well as mail. Nobody wants to forget to foreword a bill. Heirlooms and other valuables should not be entrusted to movers; you should always ship these separately via certified mail. One must also be sure of any changes in insurance policies; sometimes, when one moves over state lines, there are changes in policies. Memberships to health clubs, pools, and gyms must also be cancelled before you move. You need to separate your disposables from the rest of your possessions. Items in your home that you no longer use should be thrown away or sold at a garage sale. You should also use any perishables that you will not be able to take with you during the move. Also, the vehicle you will use to move must be tuned up. Other things, such as library books, change of address forms, and bank account transfers must also be taken care of. Designate a bag of essentials that you will use while much of your stuff is in storage. You should make a checklist as well. A checklist can be useful for when you are leaving your home. Make sure that none of your material used to move with have leaks or faulty hinges. Defrost your refrigerator at least one day before the move. You will also need to reserve the elevator on your move-in day. Moving is a hassle, but by taking the right measures, you can minimize the damage. There are enough things that you have to worry about, from the emotional burden to the change in scenery, that you should not have to worry about forgetting to forward a few accounts. Minimize the stress and give yourself a good start at your new home.
