High Availability (HA) ensures that people will be served at all times. The user community is available to serve people at all times. When someone cannot gain access to the system, then it is unavailable. Business people need to be able to gain access to services at all times to ensure productivity. Businesses will not run smoothly if they are not well organized. Furthermore, managers need to be able to access services at all times. When a business is first set up, high availability is very important. With things being more difficult than they ever used to be, there is a need for HA more than ever before. There used to be a time when all of a person's up-time goals could be achieved by accumulating a group of application servers. Things were a lot simpler then and all applications were run on physical servers. Today, things are much different with the way technology works. Applications are much larger than they ever were and they are looked upon as mission vital, but a person's service level agreement standards are a lot higher. People are pressurized into creating more applications that are greater in complexity and have an increased number of moving parts. For those interested in HA and disaster recovery this is a difficult time with some strange challenges. When thinking about an on-line retail application, the application is the business service. Furthermore, it consists of many applications that form a multi-tier application stack. The stack would consist of a web tier, a database tier and an application tier. When the database tier is placed on a large server with several other servers it creates a problem of traditional bundle products. Applying the right software methods is vital for any business productivity. Everything is stored on complex computer systems and if these crash, then recovery needs to be swift and secure. What's more, is that a recovery professional should do the work. Confidentiality must be kept at all times. Recovering files is not a job for any office worker to do. It requires a highly trained professional. What must be considered, is that files are confidential and must be kept this way. Most businesses store private client information. If the computer crashes, then this information must be recovered in a highly confidential manner. With current growth in system consolidation and virtualization there has never been a more important time for HA. Without such systems, businesses would not be able to run efficiently. HA helps businesses to accomplish processing goals. When a computer system is planned correctly, downtime will not affect the user's ability to carry on using the system. In the busy world that we are living in, user's must not be affected by unplanned equipment downtime. Important applications must keep running on the Internet, without them, businesses would not be able to run smoothly. The computer environment must be designed in such a way, that the system capacity can be changed as the business needs alter. Vertical scaling might be an option to increase productivity. However, most systems that provide vertical scaling are expensive. The difference between fault tolerance and High Availability (HA) must be understood. Many people get confused when comparing the two. Whereas fault tolerance systems have a self healing property inbuilt, HA is achieved by installing software that runs through an operating system.
