Are School Uniforms Helpful?

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.nextlevelarticles.com/rss.php?rss=92
By : Mark Etinger

To preface this article, I want to declare that I did not go to a school that required a uniform. That's not to say that my school did not have a dress code, it did, and a strict one, but uniforms were not required. I sometimes wonder if I would have gotten teased less or picked on less if I had been made to wear girl's school skirts or school uniform shirts.

A few of my dearest friends attended schools which required all of the students to wear kids school uniforms. We once had a discussion about the effectiveness and reasoning for wearing uniforms to school.

First, we brought up the subject of equality. If a student is attending a private school, it should not be assumed that their family is wealthy enough to send them there. Even young children can attend a private school on a scholarship. While it is fantastic that these children get a fine education, they might not have the money left over to purchase the most stylish or newest types of clothes. The uniforms are equalizers. If a student is not able to buy a pair of brand name jeans and instead shops at a large chain discount store, they should not be ridiculed by their classmates. However, it is common knowledge that this happens and children are mercilessly teased for their generic shirts and shoes.

With the addition of uniforms into a social hierarchy, it is an equalizing factor which levels the playing field. Popular kids become as stylish as the band kids and it makes it possible for everyone to be friends.

Secondly, it is economically smart. With the styles of clothing changing so often and the price of the most popular styles going up, families are finding that buying kids school uniforms is actually more financially feasible. You know that you will have to buy a set number of school uniform shirts and French toast uniform pants and skirts and nothing more for their school wear. This can certainly make the burden of clothes shopping lighter.

There have been psychological studies done about the effectiveness of learning when children are wearing uniforms versus when they are allowed to wear whatever they'd like. These studies have shown that when students are not worried about being teased for their clothes they are more likely to place more of their mind into their studies making their grades higher.
