Home Security Tips Before Going on Vacation

Vacation time is looming again and if you haven't already taken one to get away from the cold weather, you are probably looking forward to a spring break trip or something planned for the summer. According to studies, August is the busiest month to travel, and you might already have that August trip booked, or at least it is on your mind. Before you leave your home unattended, there are some home security issues you need to take care of to ensure everything is safe and sound when you return.

The first thing you'll want to consider is getting a timer for your lights. You can set any light in the house to turn on or off at regular times of the day. It's smart to set them to turn on around the time you'd normally get home from work, or as soon as it gets dark out, and turn off around the time you'd go to bed. This makes it look like there's someone actually in the house going about their normal routine.

Don't discuss your vacation openly or on social media sites like Twitter or Facebook. It's been known that many thieves will check these sites to see who will be away on vacation and will use your online information to get your address and subsequently head to your place while you are gone.

Make sure that you properly have your home security system set up. If you have cameras, make sure you have them rolling 24/7 while you are gone so you can check footage for any suspicious activity if you should unfortunately come home to find things missing. Make sure your alarm is set properly before walking out the door.

If you have a house sitter, which many people opt to do, fill them in on the home security system information so they don't accidentally set off the alarm themselves. Always, always choose someone you absolutely trust. There's been plenty of cases where someone has handed the key to their home to a friend, only to find out that friend tipped someone off and let people in to steal items. It's a sad but true fact so you need to be absolutely certain of the person taking care of your home while you are away.

Take some of these precautions before leaving on vacation and your home security will be one less thing you have to worry about. A vacation is about relaxing, not worrying about your precious items at home!
