It's amazing how much your palate can change from when you were a kid to an adult. Although, I do have some friends who seem to be happy with chicken fingers and fries from fast food restaurants. I might have turned into a little bit of a food snob (definite understatement), but it's good to appreciate the difference between a burger from McDonald's and one from Bobby Flay's burger joint. Because there IS a difference and you should note that. If you can't taste that, then that's just sad. You will spend your entire life thinking McDonald's makes quality burgers.
But back to the topic at hand: candy. The same goes for the desserts and other treats I had as a kid. I was once completely satisfied with Snickers and Little Debbie brownies, or as my friend likes to call them "brick brownies." That nickname works for how they go down and come out. It's almost mind boggling to think that I truly thought that was what real chocolate tasted like. I can still manage to eat certain cheaper desserts and they're not so bad. Actually, I still enjoy a Snickers from time to time, along with M&Ms. I can't hate on those. But I used to be in love with Yodels, Funny Bones, and Three Musketeers. The very idea of Funny Bones makes me shudder.
Instead, I'll take an expensive box of Godiva or Max Brenner. The harsh reality is that if you want excellent food, you have to pay the price. There is a justified reason why the finer things in life are costly. Better ingredients, better quality, and overall better dessert recipes. Candy manufacturers are looking to create a product that is affordable to all. They want to make a profit and they know the masses will come running. But it's not until you take that first bite of Lindt truffles that you realize all other chocolates taste like they were made from Nesquik cocoa powder -chocolate chalk. That's the moment your fattening world comes crashing down and suddenly you can't go back.
Some people can go back to cheaply made chocolate because that's all they can afford. I have plenty of friends who have eaten foods at fine restaurants but continue to satisfy their cravings at chain restaurants. I, however, cannot. I've tasted the forbidden apple and everything else is flavorless, bland, and probably pumped full of growth hormones. I love food too much, especially candy, to settle. Instead, I'll scrimp and save to purchase finer foods and continue to snub my nose at anything of lesser quality.
