TENS Units and Other Pain Relief Methods

The business of pain relief is a booming industry, and with so many products on the market, you may be confused as to which ones best suit your needs. Before you decide on what product to use, you need to understand what symptoms different treatments address.

For example, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or TENS, Units provide a non-invasive, drug-free way of managing pain. TENS Units send small electrical impulses through the skin to the nerves in order to adjust your pain perception. When the TENS Unit overrides the pain signal, it "tricks" the brain into believing that your body is not experiencing any pain. This treatment works very well for back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, foot pain, and basically any other sharp or chronic pain, although individual results vary. During the treatment, two small electrodes are placed on either side of the affected area. Higher frequencies usually block pain signals; lower frequencies cause the body to produce endorphins, which naturally reduce pain.

TENS Units should be used with TENS electrodes, specifically silver electrodes, which are carbon electrodes that have a thin layer of silver between the pad and the backing where the actual connection is made. The silver crates a better connection between the wire lead and the actual electrode and more evenly distributes the electricity across the pad. Although silver electrodes are somewhat more expensive than traditional carbon electrodes, they are far more efficient.

Portable Ultrasounds, which create heat within the body tissues, are used to address specific conditions such as pain, muscle spasms, and joint aches or contractions. Sound waves generate vibrations within the soft tissue cells, which increases tissue temperature and induces vasodilation. This treatment is most effective when it is used in conjunction with a portable ultrasound transmission gel, which is used to conduct the wave energy to the skin. You will either feel some warmth or nothing at all. This procedure generally only lasts between two and five minutes.

For more generalized aches and pains, pain relieving gels, such as Tiger Balm and Sombra, are ideal. Different types of pain relieving gels are target to relieve the different types of pain that are associated with arthritis, overuse injuries, and everyday aches. The wide selection of specialized gels ensures that you will find a product to treat your symptoms.

With so many different types of pain relief techniques available, you need to find the one that best works for you. The type of relief you choose may depend on the kind of pain you endure, but with all of the available options, you will hopefully be able to find a satisfying solution.
