Ignoring A Bed Bug Infestation?

The lineage of an apartment can be quite strange. You will notice this if you live in a neighborhood for an extended period of time or simply keep in touch with folks who you are likely to see a lot in the traffic of going in and out of the same apartments for years. Certain neighborhoods just come to define certain social groups or vice versa. If you live in a neighborhood like this it can become vitally important that you take care of the places you live. Those apartments might end up being the homes of someone you know and like, not just a stranger you never see again. Often I find myself and friends attending events at apartments they once lived in.

Of course taking care of an apartment is not all about the floors and the walls. It is not just an issue of ensuring that major appliances continue to work and that smells are not made permanent. It might also extend to a bed bug infestation. These days bed bugs are a reality that are on people's minds. I have heard several horror stories about folks who kept mum on the subject of bed bug detection or never really found out at all what had them itching, then they passed their apartments and their bed bugs on to innocent people. If you still plan on bouncing around the old neighborhood you might want to consider a better way of handling your problem.

First and foremost you should definitely find out definitively, with the aid of some bed bug sniffing dogs, if what you have is bed bugs. Once you have identified the problem it will be up to you and your landlord or super to decide how to proceed. If the idea of a bed bug infestation is an apartment deal breaker for you that is fine but if there are leases and the like involved you may have to deal with some legal wrangling to get out. That said, allowing an apartment to with an unattended bed bug problem to be rented out without saying anything is not only amoral it is also sure to be bad for your apartment renting karma.

If you have a bed bug infestation even if you are days from moving, make sure you call it to the attention of future renters and the owners of your building. Not only will it be good for your sense of self but it will likely offer them the chance to handle the problem before they bring their stuff in. Bed bugs can lay dormant for decades and come back. You would hate to be at a party in your old stomping grounds and be asked the question "Did you guys ever have bed bugs?" without being able to say in no uncertain terms that you did everything to get rid of them.
