Home Security Should Be Every Homeowner

Home security, in today's crime ridden society, should be a priority for all homeowners. Keeping one's family and property safe is not difficult, but it takes effort, and at least once a month, the safety systems should be reviewed and updated. One way to make the house safer is to update all of the locks in the doors.

Modern locks can help prevent burglary because modern locks are harder to defeat than older lock systems with old style tumblers. Modern locks have stronger dead bolts and some lock systems have more than one dead bolt for added protection. Many modern lock systems are bump key proof.

A bump key is a device used by professional burglars to defeat the lock system without leaving traces of lock damage. The bump key is a form of modified metal used to turn the tumblers with a twist and a bump, hence the name bump key. The bad news for homeowners is that the bump key is easily made with tools found in the average garage.

The good news for homeowners is that modern locks are constructed to hold up against bump keys and other homemade devices used by common burglars. Light is a deterrent against property invasion because criminals like to work in the dark where there actions are hidden. Motion detector lights are effective deterrents against burglary because the intruder is caught off guard when the light suddenly shines on him and he might decide to run away and give up his plans.

A light attached to a timer can be an effective deterrent to burglary because when a light goes on automatically at different intervals the light gives the impression that there is someone home and awake. The key to an effective light timer is to set the light to come on at different intervals. If the light comes on at the same time every night a savvy burglar might assume that the light is attached to a timer.

Keep hedges and plants trimmed do not give burglars a place to hide. Do not allow bushes and hedges to grow so tall that the bushes and hedges block the view from the windows from inside the house. One should be able to look outside his windows to see if there is someone in the yard hiding without having a bush or plant obstructing the view.

Consider having a protection system installed in the home such as motion detectors that set off an alarm in a centralized command center where trained personnel are monitoring the system 24 hours daily. When the detector is set off the command center personnel will have police dispatched to the house. This is one of the best ways to keep one's house and family protected from intruders.

Every homeowner should make home security a priority. Home invasions are on the rise, perhaps because of the poor economy, so it is important to protect one's house and family. Replace old locks with modern lock systems, use light as a burglar deterrent, and consider using a professional protection service which has trained personnel at the ready.
