Music Entertainment and Taking a Look at the 2012 Grammy Nominees

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.nextlevelarticles.com/rss.php?rss=1
By : Mark Etinger    When it comes to the Grammy's, there are nominees that everyone will agree with, while there are others that make people scratch their heads. And then there are even still more nominees of bands that most people haven't even heard of, which makes you wonder where they came from and who was listening to them in the first place, for them to even be recognized. This year's Grammy's seem to sway in the favor of more popular music over all. It's embraced indie rock as the main sound for the rock category, it has nominated names we expect for album of the year and some we don't, and the rap category seems to have an eclectic collection of popular rappers and more lesser known, political rappers all thrown into one. It's an interesting dynamic of music. The two biggest categories are always Best Record of the Year and Best Album of the Year, which often are shared between the same nominees, for the most part. Adele, Bon Iver and Mumford and Sons all have a rightful place atop the list of Record of the Year. Their music is beautiful, well written, and they really have talent. But then you throw in the likes of Bruno Mars' Grenade (and I like Bruno Mars, but come on) and Katy Perry's Firework, and you wonder how they even can be compared to these other great artists at all. Maybe it's because their music is fairly generic and the other 3 artists have been a nice change of pace from the every day, but it just doesn't seem right to have them nominated. For Best New Artist, there are a few surprises like Skrillex, for one. A dubstep artist getting nominated for a Grammy is a scenario I thought was highly unlikely. Of course, he won't win. It's more like an easy nod to say that they are acknowledging it, but the won't go as far as to give them the Grammy. If they do, the world might freeze over. And why even bother nominating anyone else besides Jay-Z and Kanye for the Best Rap Song? You know they are going to win because of name, regardless of whether the song Otis is any good or not (which is up to you on which side you fall on). It's one of those categories where you just shake your head and know that music, no matter what it is, is only as good as the popularity of the artist that makes it. But if Lupe Fiasco can pull off winning Best Rap Album, there may be hope for us yet.
