How to Care For Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are a popular choice among many contact lens wearers, both for comfort and ease of use. One of the primary concerns of many people who wear contacts is the comfort level of the contact lens as it sits on the eye. With soft contact lenses, that problem isn't usually a problem at all, but despite the comfort level it's still crucial to care for soft contacts properly. Improper contact lens care can result in serious eye infections that could even cause blindness in a worst-case scenario. It can seem quite inconvenient and sometimes even a little tricky to treat your contacts the way you should, but in the end the extra effort will be more than worth it.

Basically, caring for your soft contact lenses comes down to cleaning, rinsing and disinfecting. Before you even lay a finger on a soft contact lens, wash your hands well and dry them off with a lint-free towel. Then, take one contact lens out of the holder and clean it with the solution that was recommended by your eye doctor. This helps to wash away any debris from your contacts to keep the comfort level high. Be sure to follow the directions exactly. Different solutions may have slightly different instructions for use.

Before you place the contact lens back in the lens holder, rinse it off one more time to be sure any dirt or debris is removed. It may seem like a little bit of overkill, but you want to be certain that anything sitting directly on your eyeball is clean. Fill each side of the contact lens holder with fresh solution. If there was any left from before, be sure to empty it out before you add more. This disinfection process will kill any microorganisms that are on the contacts, which helps to protect the health of your eyes. Repeat the steps on the other contact. The time that is required for your contacts to disinfect properly will vary depending on the specific product you're using.

Sometimes, soft contact lens care goes beyond just the clean, rinse and disinfect protocol. Some people deposit more protein onto their contact lenses during use, so their doctor might prescribe a protein removal product. People who have issues with dryness or irritation may want to use eye drops for lubrication as part of the soft contact lens care process. Regardless of how many extra steps you take as part of the process, be sure to keep an eye on the expiration dates of all of your soft contact lens products, especially if they are free of preservatives.

Using solution and other products that have passed expiration is only asking for trouble. It's also important that you refrain from switching around your contact lens routine without checking with your eye doctor first. Even small changes can have large implications in the health of your eyes, so always ask before you change something.
