Tabletop Accessories And Perceptions Of Control Through The Years

When you are a kid the idea of being an adult is very much steeped in the idea of being able to eat and drink whatever you want whenever you want, and being able to entertain friends all the time. Of course the vast gray area that rears it's head as we actually become grown ups is a lot muckier than the over simplicity of our young brain's perception. Suddenly we have bills to worry about and health concerns as far as our food intake. We concern ourselves with keeping up proper appearances and we answer to our significant others and a wide array of concerns that keep us from partying every moment of every day.

Of course in those moments of down time where you actually do get to entertain you find yourself often less interested in cutting loose than in making the arrangements comfortable for your guests and aesthetically pleasing. You get a specialty wine carafe or whiskey decanters depending on the beverage choices you are making. For non alcoholic fruit based beverages you get decorative and charming beverage dispensers. To display pastries and cake you get glass cake stands. When you get older you have some trouble finding fun in an unbridled tizzy. Instead you want control and comfort. You want things to look nice and your joy to be marked by a sense of stability.

The reasons for this are strangely simple but quite revealing. We want our fun to be controlled because as time marches forward and we grow up we realize just how little control even adults have. After a youth spent expecting ourselves to evolve in to autonomous bodies prepared for anything life has to throw at us and ultimately the masters of our very own destiny we realize that there are a number of forces we now have to answer to. As a result our parties become less about cutting loose and more about maintaining a balance and control over fun. We put our beverages in a glass beverage dispenser because it makes the entire situation feel more controlled. We utilize the right sort of flatware or the proper glass for a particular drink because we want things to go right.

In the end we still want the same things that we were yearning for in our youth. We just want to be in control. Realizing as we do that even as we age we get no more control over our lives can be jarring but in many ways knowing that in fact everything falls into a perfectly acceptable system where things are in their proper place has it's own sense of comfort. We like the beverages we have carefully placed inside a glass beverage dispenser are in the place we belong and at our parties at least so is everything else.
