More Blankets, Smaller Heating Bill

Every summer your electric bill will skyrocket as you crank out the air conditioners. Likewise, every winter you can expect a nice surge in your heating bill. The only time you can ever enjoy a lower bill is spring and fall, and those are fleeting seasons. There are plenty of ways to knock down those prices in the winter. You just have to be willing to suffer through just a little bit more cold than you might be used to.

When you first move out and start paying your own bills, you might be shocked at the price difference in your heating bill from November to December and even December to January. As the temperature sinks, the prices go up. The easiest way to be smart about your heating usage is to turn off the heat every time you leave your home. No one is home, why have the heat on? Every time you leave, make sure you turn the dial all the way down to ensure it is completely off.

Insulation is very important so you can keep as much warm air inside your home as possible. Ensure that all windows are properly insulated and are not letting heat escape and cold air in. You don't have to be an expert home repairer. They are plenty of easy fixes for drafts. You can use self-stick rubber weather sealing at any hardware store. Just cut the strip to fit your window. Window insulation film will work too and can be applied to the indoor window frame. Cellular shades and curtains do more than just give you privacy and block out light. They keep out drafts! Similar products can also be purchased to insult any and all doors in the home.

Learn to live comfortably with the heat just a little bit lower than normal. Most people enjoy the heat to be on around 72 degrees or so. But if you lower it to just below 70 degrees, you can help lower your cost without completely freezing. Just invest in plenty of warm blankets, sweaters, and robes. A cotton sheet set plus a comforter and extra fleece blankets on top will be more than enough to keep you warm at night. When walking around the home, layer a sweater or throw on a woven blanket. You don't have to keep the house like an ice box just to save money, but there is no need to keep it like a sauna either.

Be willing to use a little less heat and you can enjoy a lesser heating bill.
