How To Shop For and Decorate With Vintage Furniture

Vintage furniture shopping is a lot of fun because you never know what pieces you are going to find. Whether you are browsing a thrift store or know of a particular website that sells great pieces, picking out vintage for the home can really liven it up and make it feel more like a home. Using those great colorful accessories and pieces in your home the right way is all about your own personal style and where you think they fit best.

Firstly, when choosing vintage furniture you need to go for what you like. Trying to fit a mold of a specific style is going to be very hard with vintage, because every piece is one of a kind. You don't get to browse several similar pieces in a certain style; you get what you find at the moment. If you limit yourself, you are going to walk away empty handed and time and time again be truly disappointed. Instead, buy what appeals to you. After all, you are the one living with it, so you better love it!

Vintage furniture often comes in a variety of wood tones. Don't be afraid to mix them. Who said if you buy a cherry wood coffee table that your end tables have to match? It's definitely not a must for decorating. You can match in tone, but still have slightly different colors. Just don't go too far off the spectrum, or it will clash pretty harshly.

Re-purposing vintage is an option and is OK. A lot of people are so scared to touch a vintage piece because that's "how it was mean to be." But re-purposing it by adding new upholstery or using a wardrobe cabinet as an enclosed television stand is alright. Use it for what you really need it for, which is not necessarily its original purpose.

You can definitely mix up modern pieces and vintage furniture. A lot of contemporary things you'll find in common furniture stores appear to be vintage, although they are not. You can match similar concepts and designs, so don't think buying one piece of vintage means everything in that room needs to be. It's amazing what some mix and matching can do to a place.

So, get excited for your next vintage furniture shopping experience. You could find some really great pieces that change your home for the better. Go with what you love and what really shines through as your style!
