Many people who redecorate their homes want to put a personal touch on their space. This means choosing the materials, going over the blueprints and purchasing new furniture and accessories. One thing that people often overlook, however, is making their own tiles.
Don't think you need to hand paint every ceramic tile in your kitchen or bathroom. You can choose ceramic or porcelain tile for 95% of the room and just paint a few centerpiece tiles to be fitted in amongst your other tiles.

Painting ceramic tiles can be a fun way to customize your home. If you are willing to invest a bit of time and money, painting your own tiles can be easy.

The first thing you need to do is buy supplies. This means buying some blank tiles, paint and brushes, and glaze. You should also find a college campus, pottery house, or art studio in your area that has a kiln. Most places that have a kiln have a system by which community members can spend time firing their ceramic goods. If you really take your new hobby seriously, there are many lines of home ceramic kilns for the passionate hobbyist. These spaces usually have people who can help you work the kiln and determine the right temperature for your specific tile, paint, and glaze.

Next, you are going to want to choose the design theme of the space you are redoing. Choose the tiles that will occupy most of the walls and flooring. These will guide you in your aesthetic choices in regards to your custom tiles. Don't feel you need to use tiles that are the same material as your custom tiles. Glass tiles can look great next to hand painted ceramic tile. The handmade ceramic tile gets a lot of visual attention next to glass tiles because the stark contrast in the materials.

You should also try to get an idea of how many custom tiles you need. When you have measured the space and the tiles, you will have a pretty good idea of how many tiles you need. Then it's up to you to decide how many of these you will be custom painted. Will every 10th tile be a custom? Maybe one entire row will be custom tiles. The number and arrangement of custom tiles is up to you.
Custom tiles will be your pride and joy whenever you have visitors. Try your hand at tile design.
