An Idiot Who's An Expert On How To Be Social

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.nextlevelarticles.com/rss.php?rss=140
By : Mark Etinger

A lot of friends of mine, males and females alike, like to come to me for relationship advice. I often reflect on this after a long seemingly insightful soliloquy in which I tell someone I know and care about the best way to handle some particular situation and I like to remind them that I am kind of dumb about a lot of stuff. I am not saying that I don't have good advice to share or love help to offer but I just can not be particularly confident in my ability to properly advise anyone about how best to approach their life as my life is far from figured out. I have a bed sheet for a door in an apartment where we have mostly settled for living with a family of mice. Recently, I burned myself making pierogies. Basically what I'm admitting is that while I might have a near expert level of social skills, my general life skills have for the most part completely failed me.

Often I have been praised for my ability to talk to people and listen to their problems. These of course are important skills to have, however being particularly good at talking and listening can only take you so far. Being good at these incredibly basic social skills that almost everyone has some capacity to handle is in fact like being good at say going to the bathroom or eating. That is to say excelling at something everyone has to do. I am not good at sports or fixing things, math and foreign languages always confounded me, I have precious little interest in figuring out how anything works. Instead I am good at running my mouth and knowing what your girlfriend or boyfriend is "getting at" when they talk to you that way. This skill will make me a lot of friends and that is good but otherwise it will likely get me no where.

Fact is my reliance on social skills at this point has me firmly committed to the idea that hopefully one day one of these people who trust me for so much relationship advice and personal guidance will get famous or rich. I can tell you how to be social, I might even give you the silver bullet advice on how to save your relationship, but when it comes to having marketable skills that I can utilize to become independently wealthy I am desperately in need of some guidance myself.
