Geeks Take Over The World With The Big Bang Theory

Who would have guessed that the creator of the atrocious Dharma & Greg could give birth to such a witty and delightful show as The Big Bang Theory? Maybe this is Chuck Lorre's form of penance to right the oh-so-many wrongs of that train wreck. (How it was nominated for several Emmy awards is beyond me.)

The Big Bang Theory is currently in its 5th season and how it eluded me for so long I'll never know. I vaguely remember catching an episode here and there years ago because my then boyfriend was in love with it. He's a geek, how could he not love it? I think I found it mildly amusing,at the least. Then I began hearing my siblings and mother rambling on about it all the time. They would quote episodes and inside jokes, laughing all the while. Then one fine day, TBS scooped up syndication for the show. With less Family Guy reruns on now, I thought I'd give it a shot. Plus there probably wasn't a Law & Order episode on either. I was hooked. It took me 3-4 months to finally catch up to last week's newest episode. Some might call that obsessive. I call it devotion.

So what is the appeal of this show? Obviously, if you're a nerd, geek, or dork (there are differences), there is no way you can hate on this show. You have physics and math jokes, mostly elitist ones downgrading geology and paleontology as lesser sciences. There is the realism of 4 socially awkward geniuses who have trouble in their dating life. Let's not forget all the geek culture references to comic books, science fiction films and television shows, and video games. But what about the rest of us who don't fully understand all those jokes? Here's where the "genius" part comes into play (see what I did there?) The show manages to weave in plenty of humor for us simple folks, often making fun of themselves and using the dim-witted Penny as a representation of ourselves. If Fraiser seemed too pompous for you, Big Bang will be a breath of fresh air. Even if you don't understand String Theory, you can still laugh at Howard's terrible pickup lines, Raj's selective mutism, and Sheldon's very being.

You have four quirky geniuses who couldn't be stupider when it comes to women and a bubbly blonde who went to community college. How these five stay friends eludes us all, but it works and it works well. Further adding new a new dynamic to the show is Howard's adorable fiancee and the quirky female version of neurotic Sheldon, Amy Farrah Fowler. The female additions round out this amazing cast offering even more laughs than before.

The humor is intelligent and silly, witty and sarcastic. It's a show that both my nerdy friends and my mother can enjoy. If that isn't a crowd-pleaser, I don't know what is.
