When Short Term Therapy Becomes Long Term

By : Mark Etinger

It is hard to know what the duration of a rehab program will be when you are first starting out in one. When someone has an accident and first check themselves into rehab centers or nursing homes the hope is that they will be back to their old selves quickly and with little incident. Still even if your intention was for short term rehab you may soon find yourself renewing for longer term care and a more steadily paced rehabilitation. This can be incredibly disappointing and can start to create a sense that care could stretch on well into the future. The important thing to do here is remain patient and vigilant as you try and find your own balance of progressive personal growth. It is important to keep in mind that suffering major setbacks that would require this sort of rehabilitation training never results in uniformity in getting well. Everyone's accident and everyone's bodies are different.

The most important thing about going through long or short term rehabilitation is definitely to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. Struggling through trying and often painful physical therapy can take a huge toll on not only the patient but on their family and friends as well. In all cases a strong support system staying active and staying positive is the best way to assure some level of success and if not complete recovery an acceptance of the realities of a given situation. Being involved does not necessarily mean visiting a patient every day. Encouraging letters, phone calls and a little bit of space should also be considered to give a patient a balanced life and to offer them some time to make progress not under a microscope.

In every case it is important that a patient remain focused and keep pushing themselves. With the help of the aids, therapists, and doctors working to get you back to your physical peak you will establish a regiment that works for you. It will be a plan focused on the specifics of your situation and on your physical ability and over time the plan will evolve with your progress. You may not have a clear view of where exactly you will find yourself in a few months or even a year but on a day to day week to week basis you will know how things are advancing.

Stay positive and trust the professionals. Keep loved ones close. Hope for the best, but be ready for the worst. In rehabilitation therapy that is all you can do.
