Preparing for the Expo

Starting up a business, seeing it through, and having it be a success is a big deal. In order to keep that momentum going, you need to solidify your position in the market. To do this you must always remind people why they can benefit from your products and/or services. One way to get your name out in the open and rearing its head for the charge is by remaining active in local events.

Set time on your work calendar to participate in business expos. Where else could you have a fully interactive one-on-one conversation with other field experts and consumers? Understanding how to navigate the business expo is one of the most valuable tricks of the trade and the one with the most clout.

The first step is preparation. Do online research to find the most highly acclaimed conventions and product showcases. Get a general overview of the venue, the competition, and the registration form. Once you have selected your favorites, pick the top choices and set time on the calendar. Make sure that you or several employees can attend. Get at least a few meetings together to plan an effective campaign- it should include banners, a showcase, pamphlets, and Q&A. It should effectively portray your business' mission statement and current goals. It should also underline future projects.

If you intend to have a stand, you must have several different personalities there. You need to warm and friendly greeter, the information "station" with all the answers, and the deal-closer. These assistants are there to work their networking magic and garner attention and adoration of consumers and possible business connections. Make sure your booth has a sign-up form for newsletters and that you hand out cards to your Facebook and Twitter feeds. Keep things light and interesting.

While you are at it, you also should take time to attend a seminar (or if you are knowledgeable on a topic to find out how you can host or co-host one). These are the ideal networking events. Pay attention to any Powerpoint presentations, take notes, and keep a copy of handouts. Get business cards here too and talk with fellow attendees. If you're presenting, then you should always make yourself available for a Q&A. Get to know your audience so that you can tailor the discussion. Also, keep that in mind for future presentations. These are simple ways to ready your company for a convention. Obviously each different trade show is going to be slightly different, not to mention a variety of attendees. Once you get the gist of showcasing, you will be an unstoppable force.
