Many people will be attending family reunions throughout the year and there isn't any better time for you to capture some picture frame quality pictures of your family. Most families only have one time of the year that such a large number of the family members gather together in one place. Chances are good that you'll only see some of your relations during this once-a-year event. Taking some good shots of your family can be challenging, but if you get ready in advance you will wind up with some memorable, heirloom quality pictures. Most families don't hire a photographer for their own family reunion, but rely instead on the amateur picture takers in the family to capture the great memories being made. Even though pictures of the whole family can be hard to capture, they are definitely worth the hard work, especially after a few years when some family members may have passed away. Remember the following tips when you are capturing shots of the family: • Get ready ahead of time. Planning in advance for taking photographs at the family reunion is a wise idea. Put together a list of all the pictures you know you want to get, as well as any specific groups of people you hope to get pictures of. Decide exactly where you will want the photos taken. • If you can, ask that your family members to wear matching clothing. If everyone has a got a special tee-shirt made for the get-together then that will be even better. If not, ask everyone to wear a particular color, such as navy blue or black. If you steer clear of stripes and patterns, or bright colors, then no one person will stand out in your group picture. • Make sure that there is plenty of light for your family reunion photographs. The flash on a camera will only extend to a certain range. The time to get the best natural lighting is outside in the morning or right before dusk. It may also be a good idea to take outdoor pictures on a cloudy day. Never take photos in direct sunlight. One good way to snap a group photograph at your family reunion is to have the whole group stand in full shade when facing the camera. • Use the natural surroundings of the reunion venue to your advantage when staging a picture. Bleachers, benches, and staircases make for great photos where you want to stagger the height of your subject. A big group may also be positioned around playground equipment. Avoid backgrounds that are hectic and will distract from the target of your photo. Or you might want to snap some aerial shots. To achieve this, stand up on a ladder or balcony, pointing the camera down at the people while they are looking up at you. • Keep the spot where the picture will hang in mind. When you put the snapshot in a picture frame, will it need to be a vertical or horizontal shot? Keeping this small point in mind may make a shot good or bad, and will establish which way you would like your subjects to pose. You'll find these tips very helpful for making picture time fun and simple at your next family reunion.
