Good Vibrations and Bad Vibes

If you're looking at getting a no fee apartment, it's likely you're going to look at several places. Probably more than three or four before you find the right one. It's likely you may see more than a dozen before you settle on the right place for you.

No one likes moving and when you look at an apartment for rent you want it to be more permanent so you don't have to pack up all of your earthly belongings again and again. Even moving a few blocks away is a pain. So make sure you choose the right apartment for rent before you move in.

One way to pick the right place is to just go see it in person. Photos on sites like Craigslist or on a broker's website are likely not going to give you the actual feel and layout of the apartment. You don't want it to be a surprise when you first walk in with a cat carrier in one hand and a box of essentials in the other.

Go see it in person and get a feel for the space. One person recently told me a story about how they walked into an apartment that was completely cleaned out except for the bathroom which was piled high with books written in Hebrew. This was so odd and threw off the potential renters so much that even though the rest of the space was nice, was in a good location, and in their price range, they passed on the apartment.

It can be that simple. If an apartment has a "bad vibe" or just doesn't feel right to you, you should think twice before settling there. If you don't love it upon first sight, it's unlikely that you will enjoy living there once you move all of your stuff in.

Conversely, if you walk in and absolutely fall in love with the place, you should definitely seriously consider it. Even if it's a little above your range or just on the cusp of being in the "right neighborhood" this apartment can be your little oasis. If you love it, you'll love coming home to it. And let's face it, if it's close enough to your price and location, isn't that a good enough endorsement for a huge living room full of sunlight and a view of a tree lined street?

I guess the moral here is: follow your gut. If your gut tells you a place is a little creepy, just pass.
