Design Tools for the Amateur

In today's sluggish economy the success of a business can be determined by how good they are at spreading their message.

Custom banner design is an important part of how the public reacts to your business, making the design of these banners important.
There are lots of design tools available for the amateur large format banner designer. An excellent one is the reverse font finder. If you see a font you want to use but aren't sure what it is just snap a picture of it. Font finding websites allow you to upload these images and their system can tell you what the font is called and where to find it. There are also massive font databases online which give you a lot of options when it comes to finding that perfect font.

Deciding the colors to be used in a retractable banner, or any banner, is another important decision you have to make. Much in the same way there are databases of fonts online there are databases of tried and true color combinations. These websites usually work by taking certain principals and applying them to the color wheel. You can choose one or two colors and it can give you complementary, analogous, and other color combinations.

You should also try to find advertisements in magazines, on billboards, or online to model your trade show banner (or other banner) after. Don't copy, per se, but you can take the same principles you see and apply them to your advertisement. This can be easier said than done, however. If you have no experience using programs like InDesign and Photoshop you will encounter difficulties. If you have an idea about how you want your trade show banner to look (colors, fonts, aesthetic impact) a designer will have a much easier time delivering something you will like.

If you do choose to work with a designer be as specific as possible. Make sure to get the designer's impute as well. Keep in mind they are the ones with the knowledge of design so any advice they give you will be well informed. When designing a pull up banner, or anything else, you want to give the designer a broad idea and let him or her smooth out the details.

The 2007 film Helvetica is a good source of inspiration. It used the universally recognized font of Helvetica to discuss the history of fonts and typographical design. It features some of history's most well designed and recognizable posters, large format banners, advertisements, and logos.
