Unique Furniture For A Small Apartment

When space is tight, home design and decoration can be a daunting task. But even when space is tight, you don't have to sacrifice style. With a few nifty techniques, you can learn how to finagle unique furniture that will work with the space without losing out charm and appeal.

No matter what size you're working with, you need to measure, twice. You can't afford to have furniture that's too big. Start by utilizing what storage space you have, because you won't have much. If you're lacking closet space, try incorporating a trunk or chest. Not only will you be able to store your extra stuff, this segues into the next piece of advice, buy multipurpose furniture. Now you can turn that trunk into a coffee table for the living room. Or if you don't need a trunk, try using an ottoman to double as a table as well. Just choose an oversized one.

Shelving will no doubt come in useful. When space isn't wide enough, always go vertical! Choose tall bookshelves and armoires. Floating shelves will truly save on space. Then you'll have plenty of room for other furniture like couches, beds, and dressers. Whether you have both a kitchen and a dining room or just the former, go for a bistro table or a drop-leaf. You can push it against the wall when it's just you and add the extra piece when guests are over. Even though these tables are seen as more casual, dress it up with a tablecloth and nice place settings.

When you search for unique furniture, don't even bother looking at bulky furniture. You need to slim down. For couches, choose narrow arms instead of ornate scrolled arms. You don't need to buy furniture that would fit a child's room. It just needs a slim silhouette. When choosing tabletops, either for accent tables or a dining table, go for glass tops with metal bases. The glass will take up negative space and give off a more airy feeling.

Need some colorful accessories and accent furniture? You don't want to clutter with too many pieces, but you can't place just large pieces of furniture. Choose pieces that will make a big impact without taking up too much space. Try a stunning piece of artwork on the wall, a handcrafted lamp, a bright garden stool.

In terms of color, most people in smaller spaces prefer a more neutral color palette to make the space seem larger than it is. But add some texture to the walls so the colors don't become a washout.

As long as you shop correctly for the space and choose unique furniture, your small apartment doesn't have to lack flair.
