The importance of ensuring that the storm water management systems around your home and neighborhood are operating in an optimal condition can never be overemphasized. It is a well known fact these systems serves as the major block between a heavy rainfall and a flood. However, if you and your neighbors fail to see to optimal operation of the systems you could have only yourselves to blame in the event of a flood. In simple terms, storm waters refers to the surplus flow that is a result of the melting of snow or a heavy rainfall that the ground cannot absorb. Naturally, such a flow will follow a natural course to run into streams, rivers and lakes. However, there are times when the natural flow may get out of hand and turn into a flood. However, to avoid such a disaster, artificial systems are put in place to control how the flow gets to the rivers. These artificial systems serves a lot of different functions but the main function that they serve are the detention, retention of the torrent until a use can be found for it. The detention of the flow delays the speed at which it moves so that more of it could be absorbed into the ground and to ensure that low lying areas do not become quickly saturated. The retention of the flow ensures that the water is retained until it can be used for a suitable purpose. After the excess flow might have been retained in a reservoir or underground tank, it is usually treated or in the reservoir so that it can be free of harmful substances that could cause harm to humans, plants and animals. Such a treated supply is usually used for industrial functions or it could be used for cleaning purposes. Sometimes, the flow may be channeled into natural water bodies. A flood is a kind of natural disaster that could cause a lot of damage to properties and could also lead to loss of lives. However, everyone has to take an active part in ensuring that a flood does not break out. A good way of taking an active part is by taking control of what happens to the run-off on your property. You could start by ensuring that you increase the rate at which the low-lying areas on your property absorb the water so that it does not become a pool. You should know that if the run-off becomes a pool, it could turn into a breeding ground for harmful germs. In addition, the pool may later find an exit and flow into the drainage system in the neighborhood. If this happens, it means that there would be an increase in the volume of water passing through the drain. Another way of playing an active part in ensuring that the flow does not turn into a flood is by making sure that your land could absorb a lot of the flow. You can do this by reducing the total area that will be paved on your property. Other than walkways and such other area, you need not pave other parts of the land, because water would not be able to get into the soil if the land is paved. In addition, you should also be concerned about how your actions affect the drainage that you have in the neighborhood. For instance, if you dump your dirt into the drain and it becomes clogged, it could have disastrous consequences. You should also ensure that you teach your kids the importance of keeping the drains free of dirt. If you and others are committed to ensuring that you keep your storm water management systems working optimally, you will not need to worry about a flood after a heavy rainfall.
