Revitalizing An Old Car With Aftermarket Accessories

It might be a little strange, but as soon as I turned 16 my dad taught me how to change and check the oil, fix a flat, fill a tire, and change a set of engine rings. Maybe it was overkill, but I think it's because he really wanted a son to pal around with. Lucky for him, I got hooked on fixing cars. We would go out to the garage and work on the old junker he had in the garage. I learned how to use a socket wrench and what spark plugs were for. But once we got the old car up and running, we moved on to bigger problems.

Finding aftermarket accessories for an old car (specifically a Dodge Charger from the 1960s) is pretty difficult. But finding the right parts is so worth it. You need to find yourself the proper mud flaps, headlight covers, even car door handles!

It can be very difficult to track down the parts to make an old car run like it did in its prime. However, there are some tips that you can use to find the parts you need.

Firstly, you can look on sites like Craigslist and Ebay. Usually, you can find something close to what you are looking for on those sites. You've got to be absolutely certain that the parts are the same year and model number as the ones you need. Yes, this will take research but wouldn't you rather get the right thing the first time rather than find out that the new billet grille was for a sedan when you have a coup?

Magazines are also a great source for information. Grab any classic car magazine from the line at the grocery store or at your local bookstore and look through the classified section. In my hometown, there was also a "PennySaver" newspaper that you could buy down at the corner store that was strictly classified ads. This was a great help to dad and me.

Lastly, you should check out your local salvage yards. Owners of junk yards usually know the value of things like port hole covers when classic and vintage cars come in and save them accordingly. If you make friends with them and tell them what you're looking for, they are likely to be a great asset to your search.

Yes, my dad and I were buddies while we were getting the car up and running. We remain bonded over this process today.
