With so many vitamins and supplements on the market it can be hard to decide which ones are right for you. Of course you should be taking a daily multivitamin, but if that is all you are doing you are not getting the full vita-maniacal experience. A multivitamin promotes general health but taking other vitamins and minerals can promote specific health needs. Vitamins and supplements can be taken to prevent heart disease, aid weight lost, beautify skin and hair, and improve cognitive function. You should discuss your health needs and goals with your doctor or nutritionist and buy supplements accordingly. Some very popular and extraordinarily healthy products on the market right now are fish oil supplements. Fish oil is great because it protects the heart and the brain. Although the study of fish oil is in its infancy most nutritionists link it to better cognitive function (for kids, adults and the elderly), higher levels of healthy cholesterol, and lower instances of cancer. It is a long established fact that eating fish is good for you so it should come as no surprise that fish oil supplements boost health. Unfortunately fish oil is one of few supplements not available in vegan/vegetarian form. Hopefully they will synthesize fish oil soon and vegans and vegetarian can get on the fish oil supplement band wagon. If you are feeling a little blue because of the dark wintery days you should buy supplements or tablets with vitamins C, and B12. Both vitamin C and B12 are essentially non-toxic at any dose so you don't need to worry about taking too much if they appear in your daily multivitamin and other supplements. B12 is an important part of the way your brain and body work. B12 deficiency can lead to depression, fatigue and poor memory. A lot of people suffer from these symptoms due to a lack of B12 but don't make the connection. Vitamin C is a good winter vitamin because it prevents illness which in turn makes you sad. Some studies also connect vitamin C with the production of the brain's 'feel good' chemicals but more research is needed. When you buy supplements or multivitamins it is important to go with a trusted brand. Unlike medicines supplements are not tightly regulated by the FDA. There are a lot of fakes out there especially online. Go with a trusted brand like Solgar. If something seems off about the packaging or the pills themselves get rid of them. Don't take chances with your health.
