Common Auto Insurance Discounts

The concept of the discount is rarely more widely used than when dealing with auto insurance. Most people aren't quick to turn down a discount no matter what the product or service, but with auto insurance, the nature of discounts may be the difference between you signing on or moving on to a different provider. No matter your age or driving experience, you should be able to find auto insurance discounts to suit your needs. Once you sit down with an agent and give all your basic information, ask which discounts are available to you.

For younger drivers, many auto insurance carriers offer driver's safety course discounts or good grades discounts. The good grades discount is usually based on the principle that students who work hard on their studies are generally more responsible and that will translate into a better driving record. The safety course discount lets the insurer know you have the necessary knowledge to drive defensively and avoid trouble.

Safety is always a huge issue for auto insurance companies, and if you've had a safe driving record for the last few years, you'll likely receive a discount because of it. With some auto insurance companies, you can save up to 40% on your rates just by having a clean driving record, meaning no accidents or tickets. The safety issue also extends into any anti-theft devices you may have installed on your vehicle. Obviously, theft is a big problem for auto insurance providers, so you will be rewarded with a discount if you help them out. Some devices may come installed when you buy your car, and others you must purchase after the fact. Ask your auto insurance company which ones will get you the best discount.

If you insure more than one vehicle, or sign up for more than just auto insurance, you're likely to get a discount, too. If you have more than one car in the family, it pays to attach all of them to the auto insurance policy. Likewise, if you sign on for home insurance or other type of insurance with the same company, you will get a discount. Ask about the company's multi-car and multi-policy discounts before you sign up.

Some other common auto insurance discounts include membership with different auto clubs, long-term customer discounts, or discounts based on where you live. It makes sense that if you live in a rural area with a small population, the risk for theft and other problems is diminished. If the auto insurance company you are considering is serious about having you as a client, they will gladly explain every benefit and discount you are able to receive. You're not going to qualify for all of them, as many are based on age or specific circumstances, but you will qualify for some. And, the list of common auto insurance discounts is often just a starting off point, so be sure to ask about every type of discount they offer.
