Safety is important at any age, even though we might put most of our concerns towards our children, fearing they don't know any better. But it's interesting to think how we almost seem to revert back towards our infantile state as we approach our late years. That is why senior citizen safety around one's home is so crucial. Their bodies are even more fragile and they need to be extra careful.

One of the biggest concerns in the home for the elderly are tripping hazards. Slippery hardwood floors can be dangerous but so can rugs if they're not firmly planted down. All area rugs should have a foam base underneath to prevent them from moving around. Be wary of corners which can easily roll up and pose a threat. Securely tie up any extension cords or cords from lamps and other electronic devices. There shouldn't be any clutter on the floors either and stairways need to be well lit. invest in nightlights for both the top and bottom of staircases and for hallways.

Keeping track of medication is crucial. Well it's crucial for anyone taking pills, but seniors tend to take more medications than most. That's why everything should be clearly labeled and organized. Besides getting a pill organizer, it might be a wise decision have a list of all your medications along with notes about when to take them, drug interactions, etc. Keep this pad next to the pills so you can use it for reference whenever you need.

Because your body may not be as strong as it once was, invest in aids and special gadgets to make life simpler. Grabbers can make reaching for items a breeze. Walking aids like canes and wheelchairs will make getting around both in and out of your home more convenient. Just ensure that you setup wide enough aisle space to maneuver comfortably.

The bathroom can be a dangerous place for anyone, but even more so as you age. Grab bars are a must in bathtubs and showers, along with some sort of foot grip pads in the bathtub to prevent slips. Always have a bathmat right outside the tub as well so you don't slip on the wet floor.

With these senior citizen safety tips in mind, you can prevent many accidents in the home. Remember to check that all smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are in working order. Keep the home well lit and clutter free and you can enjoy a safe home.
