Tips for Dry Cleaning

With the holidays coming up, it's time to pull out those clothes that we maybe haven't worn since last December. It's sometimes very difficult to keep your really nice clothes looking, well, really nice. You might say, "but I get them dry cleaned!" and that's great, but is it enough? Here are some tips to help you and your laundry service keep your good clothes looking fantastic.

First, did you know that moths are actually attracted to dirty clothes? Moth damage is especially bad on suits and dresses that were not properly cleaned before being stored. This is why you should always dry clean your clothes around the time winter turns to spring and again when fall turns into winter. This will eliminate the age old question "did I wear this?" It also helps in turn to minimize damage from moths.

Try using cedar hangars. The smell of cedar is actually very nice, hence the popularity of cedar hope chests to store blankets. But the smell is not only a good perk for humans, but is a major deterrent for insects! They hate the smell of it. If you can't find any cedar hangers, ask your laundry service, they will either have some for you or be able to direct you to a place that sells them.

If you follow the first rule about dry cleaning your clothes every time the seasons change, there is a chance that you will have clothes covered in plastic bags in your closet. This is something you should try to avoid. Fabrics that need to be dry cleaned are also fabrics that need to breathe to stay fresh. If you keep a plastic bag over these clothes, they won't be able to breathe and will possibly become musty and begin to attract those moths that you are so desperately trying to avoid.

Possibly the biggest help to you and your clothes, is taking it to a drop off laundry service that will listen to any concerns and special requests that you have. For example, if you have spilled white wine on the hem of your lavender dress, you should bring it in and point out the stain to your dry cleaner. This way they will be able to assess what they should do to lift the stain and pay special attention to that area.

With these easy to follow tips and tricks, you should be able to keep your clothes looking nice and fresh for years to come.
