By now you know each other pretty well. Maybe, you've been living together for six months and you want to start getting tax breaks. There've been fights and through them you've learned what it is that makes you different and what you're willing to change for the other person. You know how she brushes her teeth, what her favorite foods are, and what her favorite underwear looks like. But, there are other things to consider here. Not only are diamond engagement rings a considerable financial investment, but they are also a promise that you will spend the rest of your life with her. Till death do you part. If that makes you shiver, then give it up now.
Other things to consider: does she make you jealous intentionally? If so, she is still very insecure and your love, although you think it remains strong, will probably freeze and shatter in time. She'll probably do something to make you wonder if she really loves you, and you'll realize she's only doing it for that reason. So if there's been jealousy in the past, can it. If she's twenty-eight and you've been together for two years, and she keeps hinting at marriage and still you're just not quite sure, it's probably not right to get diamond engagement rings for each other. There's something in your subconscious that's trying to move its way forward to tell you it's not meant to be. If ever there was a time to start reading Freud, this is it.
What about your parents? Are you going to have to elope? If so, then you shouldn't have even read this far. That's the only way eloping works, when you're absolutely sure. Does your mom like her? Seriously, could you leave them alone in a room together and come back later and find them laughing? If not, then you may want to reconsider how she was brought up. Not that it's a make or break thing, but you know, at this point you're probably going over to her house for Thanksgiving and next year she'll be at yours… If you still feel unsure, then put it off. There's no rush. Chances are that there's probably someone else for you and you're just too afraid to admit it to yourself. But if she's cool on jealousy and pressure and loves your parents, then go ahead. You have my blessing to buy her fancy yellow diamonds.
