How to Make a Family Game Room Out of Your Spare Bedroom

If you have an extra bedroom or guest room that gets hardly any use, perhaps it is time to give it a complete makeover. Rather than wasting the area, why not transform it into a game room that the whole family can have fun with? You can often do this without spending very much and without working too hard. The only items you will need are your spare room, some materials for decorating, and lots of games. Here are a few easy ways to convert unused space into a family game room in your own home.

Evaluating the Bedroom

The initial thing to do while making your game room is to very carefully look over the room. If your bedroom is already furnished, you will have to figure out just what to do with your furniture. In some cases, you may be able to re-purpose the bedroom furniture items so that you can continue to utilize them in your new game area. Although it's likely that there will be pieces that simply will not work in a game room, such as a bed. In some situations, you might want to simply store these items in case you need them later on. You might also donate these items to charity or even sell them in a garage sale or on an internet auction site. When you have emptied the room, take a glimpse at the floor and also the walls. If the bedroom could use a fresh coat of paint, it could be easier to get the job done before you start contributing new furniture to the game room. Adding a bright coat of paint can really help to transform an old bedroom into an enjoyable new game room.

The Perfect Furniture to Put in a Game Area

Even though the furniture pieces you include will naturally be somewhat dependent upon the kinds of games you intend to play, there are a few items that are always useful. A nice sturdy table and chair set, large enough for your whole family to sit at, is often an indispensable part of the game room. Tables are usually a great thing to have for board games and card games. However, if you plan to play mostly video games in your room, then you may want to concentrate on a television set, an entertainment center, and comfortable seating pieces like chairs, a small sofa, or a loveseat. If your floor is something hard like wood or tile, your room may be made more comfortable by putting an area rug in front of the TV to sit on.

Hints for Redecorating the Game Room

You can have lots of fun decorating your family game area. Family photos placed in wood picture frames might serve as wall artwork. Or, try mounting old wooden game boards directly to the walls to add a decorative touch. You may also find some wallpapers that have a theme just right for a game room. You can create an intriguing chair rail border all around the perimeter of the room by using simple playing cards, placed end to end. All you need to attach them is paste for wallpaper borders. You can also use antique picture frames to exhibit game instructions, old-fashioned game board boxes, or other game-related materials as wall artwork.

So do not let that spare bedroom go unused any longer. Begin converting it into a family game room you will always enjoy.
