Leaving Hints And Requests For Jewelry Presents

By : Mark Etinger

For a few years now, my mother has been hinting to my siblings and me that she would really like some jewelry for Christmas. I'm not sure when it started but when it took hold, it REALLY took hold. She would leave what she thought were subtle hints around the house.

First, there was the open magazine. She would leave a sales paper open to a page showing off gold pendants and set it on the kitchen counter or on the bathroom sink. When she didn't think she was getting her point across, she would leave multiple copies of the paper around the house. I would find ads for white gold hoop earrings in my backpack and jewelry papers in the fridge taped to the milk.

My poor mother, she still didn't think she was doing enough so she began putting up post it notes with words and sale prices on them. She would leave them on mirrors, and even once on the front door.

My siblings and I were never hugely rich and as much as we would love to buy our mom the things she wanted, we couldn't afford it. At first, we made light of the situation by presenting her a jewelry box with a note inside that said "to be filled later." Then we really felt bad but pooling our money we still couldn't afford the jewelry we thought our mom deserved. You see, it's not enough to get her the jewelry she wants but we wanted to get her something she deserved. Mom takes care of you when you're sick. There's no one who can make mashed potatoes like her.

It's a really difficult thing to want to show your mom how much she means to you and not being able to.

This year, mom got a little desperate. She took clippings from the magazines and put them on the fridge. It may seem like she's trying to hard but honestly, she's just good naturedly joking with us. She knows we care and she knows how much we love her. She just thinks it's funny to rib us a little. This year, though, we'll see who gets the last laugh. I finally earned enough money over the last year to get her a pair of diamond hoop earrings. She will most certainly be surprised when one of her jokes shows up in her stocking this year. I can't wait to see her face.
