How to Stay in a Five-Star Hotel Without Paying Extra

The luxury hotel is remarkable in its opulence. For thousands of years humans have desired comfortable amenities that set them apart from the rest of society. We admire beautiful things and want to surround ourselves with them. Marble columns, fine statues, fountains, leather desk blotters - these are all things we associate with luxury and which make our homes and hotels of the upper echelon.

Even those who don't have fine art and coffered wood carved ceilings in their homes have the opportunity to experience them by staying in a fine hotel. This is a relatively recent notion. Until the industrial revolution, people either had this kind of wealth or they didn't. They couldn't just stay at a five-star hotel one night and get a taste of luxury.

In the wealth explosion of the 19th century people were able to know these pleasures for the first time, usually on vacations or during honeymoons. Everyone should sample these pleasures, even if it is only for one night. Make a special occasion unforgettable as you stay in the suite of a five-star hotel. There are many different ways to go about this, not all of which involve using a credit card.

First, ask for a better rate. Chances are there are group rates, or senior or corporate discounts. It's important to be nice while doing it, and to be truthful. Try offering competing rates for other luxury hotels after making some phone calls. And always ask for an upgrade. Many hotels have rooms available and are willing to give them... all you have to do is ask. If the time on the calendar is irrelevant, note that the off season is the ideal time for getting a discounted rate on a fine hotel. Book it early, or if your dates are flexible, look for promotional times. Do your research and compare weekends with weekdays. "Touristy" hotels charge more for weekends, while business-related hotels charge more during midweek.

If you travel frequently, sign up for rewards programs with your preferred hotel. Rewards can also come with using a specific credit card. And, before setting out on vacation, remember that sometimes flight and hotel combination packages are cheaper than buying individually. Local coupon emails such as Groupon or Living Social sometimes offer serious discounts of up to 50% off, which would then allow you to spend the money you would have spent on a penthouse suite.

Remember that everyone deserves a little luxury, at least once in their lives. Follow these tips to wake up in Egyptian-cotton sheets, with vistas of the ocean, marble floors in the bathroom, and a metal trash can to throw your minibar packages away.
