How to Uninstall and Store Cheap Air Conditioners

It's the winter now and you should have already removed your cheap air conditioners but sometimes the weather stays oddly warm for a while, or we just get caught up in other things we are doing. And when that happens, we start to get drafts in the winter with the AC still in and realize it's time to take care of it. There's a way to properly store your cheap air conditioners for next year, as well as take care of any drafts that remain.

When you take out your AC, window or wall, it's best to clean it now. Why leave a dirty filter for next year? It'll only be worse after all that time sitting in storage. Clean out your filter with water at a good pressure. Then you'll want to let it air dry, don't attempt to wipe it clean. You can speed up the process by placing it in the sun by the window. Wipe down the entire air conditioner as well. Windex or Lysol will work just fine.

When you store the cheap air conditioners, it's good to put it back in the original box it came in. But if you no longer have it, you can also store it in a garbage bag. It'll preserve the look of the outside of the air conditioner. It's not good to pile things on top of it, you can ruin the outer case with the weight. You also want to make sure it sits upright and not on it's side. Storing it on the wrong side can ruin the compressor, which will mean buying a new unit next year. Not something you want to find out during the sweltering heat of the summer!

If you have a wall air conditioner unit, there's usually a cover that can slip over the spot where it was installed. However, drafts often happen because the cover doesn't sit as tight as it should. To fill in those drafts, you can cut pieces of felt to stuff into the openings if they are big enough. If it's even smaller than that, consider using cellophane to cover the entire area during the colder months. As long as you store your cheap air conditioners right and take care of the gap that's left, you'll be nice and warm for the winter and ready for the summer. Your AC will work just fine in July when the temperatures start to rise!
