Great Children's Crafts to Make With Used Magazines and Newspapers

If you are looking for an excellent rainy day activity for your kid, you don't have to search any further than a heap of old newspapers or magazines. Although most people simply throw them away or carry them to the recycling center, newspapers and old magazines can actually be employed to make a variety of interesting projects. Here are some great suggestions that will help you get started on a number of paper projects. Needless to say, once you begin crafting with newspapers, you will probably come up with several new ideas by yourself.

Paper Mache Projects

There are several methods for forming old newspapers into paper mache. The paper strip technique is very easy for children to handle, even when they are little. Begin by mixing together some flour and water to make a paper mache paste. Just mix together one part flour and two parts water, as well as two or maybe three tablespoons of salt, till you have a paste that has the consistency of thick pudding. Cover a table with a drop cloth or plastic table cloth, and give your child an old shirt or apron to wear. Then, rip old newspapers into thin long strips. Give your kid a collection of empty cereal boxes, cardboard toilet tissue or paper towel tubes, or any other small cardboard items. Instruct your child to dip the strips of newspaper into the paste, remove the extra paste with their fingers, and position it on their project. Based upon on their mood, they might make animals, space ships, buildings or almost anything else. Place on a piece of waxed paper, and let dry. When dry, your child can decorate their creation with craft paints. Take a few photos of your child's creations and display in picture frames.

Cheerleading Pom-Poms Made from Paper

If your child enjoys imagining that she is a cheerleader, make her some cheap pom-poms. Simply lay several sheets of newspaper on a flat area. Then, implement a nice and sharp pair of scissors to slice the newspaper into strips about a half inch wide, and keep the strips connected along one of the edges. Cut enough strips to make two full pom-pom shapes. Next, roll up the newspapers and use the uncut edge to form a handle. Make the shape of the handles by winding masking tape around the handles. You can also add a couple of string loops to your handles. Make sure to take some pictures of your little cheerleader using her pom-poms so you can display these perfectly in picture frames.

Hand Constructed Paper

Making homemade paper can often be a fun as well as educational project for children. You will have to make sure you help with this craft because you will need to use a blender. To create the paper slurry, you will need to have a collection of used paper, such as newspaper, clean toilet or facial tissues, or some colored construction paper. If you have got a bit of clean dryer lint, this can also be useful for adding strength and stability to the paper. Rip the paper into small pieces, placing it in a blender. Add water, allowing the paper pieces to soak for about fifteen minutes. Then, make use of the blender to form a slurry mixture. Stretch a piece of plastic window screen material over a bowl, holding it with a rubber band. After that, pour out the paper slurry over the screen-covered bowl, giving the water time to drain into the bowl. Let the paper dry then cut it in the desired size and shape. You can use this paper for wrapping, crafting, or to make some nice pretty photo mats to use in picture frames.

Your children will enjoy these crafts that are the ideal way to use those extra newspapers and magazines you have lying around.
