The Advances Of Snack Vending Machines

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.nextlevelarticles.com/rss.php?rss=24
By : Mark Etinger

Like all good inventions, snack vending machines had humble beginnings. It began with books, oddly enough and switched over to gum and later to cigars, postcards, and stamps. It wasn't until the 1920's that soda and cigarettes were sold. It wasn't long after that drink and snack vending machines really began to expand to what they are today. But over a century later, vending machines are slowly developing into machines that offer us way more than just a quick and convenient snack.

We expect candy, soda, coffee, and generally foods that probably aren't the best for us. But with rising obesity weights, it didn't take long before people wanted healthier choices in their vending machines. And now you can find fresh fruit, yogurts, and granola bars that don't taste like cardboard. It didn't stop there though. People wanted more than just snacks to fill up on. It was only logical that refrigerated vending machines started selling fresh sandwiches. Of course those who manage the machines have to frequently restock. There's nothing more unappetizing than a BLT that's been sitting in the machine for a week straight.

Better quality food and more selection also means higher prices. That turkey sandwich and frozen yogurt is far more than 75 cents. So how do you combat this pricey problem? Accept credit cards of course. However, few are willing to make the switch. Snacks costs are not high to begin with and the fees for operating a credit card machine are not cheap. Only expect this added convenience at vending machines selling costly items.

A new bit of technology that's just surfacing for the first time is a smartphone app that will let you pay for the vending machine. It's created by Google and is therefore, only for Android phones. As of right now, it's actually only for one specific phone offered by Sprint. The program has only been installed on 6,000 vending machines -there are about 6 million across the country. But you have to start somewhere, right? Many believe this will be well worth the investment, more so than accepting credit cards as payment.

New technology also means vending machines can sell more than just snacks and drinks. We're seeing machines that sell umbrellas, pies, slabs of meat, books, and so much more. Japan seems to already be light years ahead of us, but we're slowly but surely starting to catch up with the "uniqueness factor." In another decade, who knows where vending machine manufacturers will take us!
