When it comes to hobbies for kids, you want to get them into something that will peak their interest, will educate them, and will keep them busy. One thing that matches all three of those needs is coin collecting. Kids seems to love the different materials and images on coins, they all have a lot of history behind them for kids to learn, and it's the kind of hobby they can continue well into adulthood, always keeping them busy. Getting children started in coin collecting is pretty easy, if you know how to start.

The easiest way to get a child started is with easier collections. The easiest ones to get their hands on is pennies and state quarters. The state quarters have been in circulation for years now and so many different ones pop up just when you get change at the grocery store! Pennies are also easy because there are so many of them. You can have them start with the year they were born and work their way up, or down! There are coin collecting supplies like folders that hold these coins for display, so they can track their progress and have a way to show off their collection. They make great pieces for show and tell at school!

Colorized coins are also a great choice for the younger set because they are so bold and beautiful. Kids loves colorful things and if they aren't old enough to appreciate the historical significance of the images depicted, they can at least appreciate the colors and the look of the coins. There are many different colorized coins, from presidents to national parks, and as they get older you can use each coin to teach them about each person and place.

As your kids get older, you can introduce them to foreign mints and coins. If you and your family love to travel a lot, you may want to hold on to foreign money for them to add to their collection. They may also want to look into special sets that get released from various mints, which can often be bought online through auction sites or collectible coin stores and sellers.

Help your child start coin collecting and they may find it to be a valuable hobby that they continue later on in their life. It can also turn into quite an investment if they hold onto their coins as they get older. With time, they'll grow rarer and more valuable!
