Where Is The Best BBQ In The U.S.?

The United States is a huge country, the third largest in the world. It produces the world's most delicious barbecue. But, where exactly is it the best? That is, if you want to eat the best barbecue in the entire United States, the most original, authentic and flavorful meats, where do you go?

Well, you have a few options. You can go to any large city and eat authentic, delicious barbecue. The best way to find the best barbecue restaurant is by checking Yelp. Users' reviews are pretty reliable.

But, let's look at where most people think of barbecue: the South. Here, smoking woods are the more traditional hickory, mesquite, and oak, which flavor the meat strongly. Memphis barbecue is home to some of the best. Ribs come wet and dry, the former slathered in sauce before and after cooking, the latter rubbed in spices. Pulled pork sandwiches are also very popular in Tennessee.

The Carolinas are home to some of the more distinctive barbecue styles. Vinegar is a large component in the sauce in the North, while in the South a peppery, tomato-based sauce is common. Also, the "Carolina Gold" sauce, mixed with yellow mustard, brown sugar, and other spices, is a welcome treat for the barbecue connoisseur.

Kansas City is known as the world's barbecue capital. This city prides itself on its many different cuts and kinds of meat, from burnt ends to smoked turkey. This is likely due to the fact that during the late 19th century, Kansas City was a rail crossroads. By the beginning of the 20th century, it was a large meatpacking city. Local hickory is common, but the key distinction in Kansas City BBQ is the sauce. Here it is served tableside, is tomato-based and comes in a variety of sweet, tangy and spicy.

And of course, we can't forget Texas barbecue. Here there are four styles, but the most common are the Central and East varieties. In the East style, the meat is cooked until it falls off the bone, over hickory. Then it is rubbed with tomato-based sauce. The Central style involves spiced rubs and pecan or oak smoking. Many of these traditions arrived with the German and Czech settlers in the region. Butchers smoked their leftover meats to save them, which they then sold to hardworking locals. Eventually the tradition evolved to what it is today.

It's hard to pin the best barbecue joint or even the best barbecue region in the entire United States. I guess most of it just comes down to…taste.
