The Three Kinds of Writers Who Use Book Binding Services

By : Mark Etinger

In the crawl towards a book binding service, I've learned many things. For one, all writers are different. They have different work patterns, reading habits, and general experiences with being encouraged or discouraged to write. They do, however, have a few things in common.

All writers write. They don't wait for inspiration to strike before putting words on the paper. Even if they have writers block, they sit and write whatever's on their minds, waiting for the right words to come. Those writers I know who are published professionally and who write for a living typically work for five hours or so each day, reading for two or three on top of that. The ones, like me, who aspire to a book binding service, usually get a couple of hours where they can on top of working a day job. All writers are good oral storytellers. They may have an added detail too many here or there, or they may repeat the punch line a couple of times, but they know how to build to a climax and present a satisfying finish. They all read a lot and know about many books and esoteric pieces of information. Ultimately though, all writers can be grouped into three different kinds: the intellectual, the satirist, and the drunk.

The intellectual writer, David Foster Wallace is a fine example, always has a lot to say. These writers have cultivated an expert sense of taste, and yet retain a curiosity regarding the arts. Their work is very highfalutin and academic. Despite how smart they are, they retain deep-seated insecurities and can often be quite unhappy.

The satirist is usually overtly pessimistic; take Jonathan Swift, for example. They are usually very aware of death, although not necessarily afraid, and if anything, readier to die than most people. They are snarky and smart and they have biting ideas about society, and are quick to note flaws and weirdness in people. They usually live a very long time.

The drunks are usually the most confident. They are more-self reliant than the other kinds of writers, like Ernest Hemingway, and are good at narrative based stories. They are imaginative and open-minded, and are usually pleasure-seeking, despite being hard-working. Usually they die the youngest.

Granted these are generalizations, and there may be other kinds of writers in between. But chances are your writer friends could probably fall into any of these three categories.
