Murphy's Law is that whatever bad will happen does happen. It's important to remember this when you miss your train, when you get a flat, or when your washing machine breaks and you find yourself in need of washing machine repairs before you leave on your big trip in two days. All of these problems, they say, make us stronger in the end. Learning how to make do with the challenges and problems life throws at us is a valuable skill. Murphy reinforced this lesson for me a couple of weeks ago.
I had a lot of errands to do after staying at my uncle's house for Thanksgiving. I woke up the next morning bright and early, ready to take the train back home. My aunt was kind enough to drop me off, and our conversation on the car ride to the station grew so intense that I wound up staying in the car for at least thirty seconds more than I should have. Finally, cutting the conversation short, I managed to get out the door and to the station. I had about a minute. Because it was the morning after a holiday, there was a line to buy tickets. A bunch of Spanish tourists couldn't figure out how to use the machines and consequently, the train came as I was getting my ticket. The doors closed right as I pulled it from the machine.
Rather than go through the woulda, shoulda, couldas of the events leading up to this disastrous inconvenience, I sat down and read until the next train came half an hour later. I had to pick up my visa to go to China, where I'll be spending the next six months teaching English. Since it was a Friday, the consulate closed early and although I still had time, I also had to go food shopping afterwards to cook dinner with an old friend.
On the way to the consulate, my bike got a flat so that I arrived right before they closed, about fifteen minutes actually, just in time. Then I got groceries, rode home and put my laundry in the washing machine to wash while I cooked. The machine didn't work. Luckily I called a reliable appliance repair company and they said they could come over tomorrow and fix it for me.
Then, as I started prepping dinner, the burners on the stove wouldn't turn on. I checked the pilot light but still, no go. I called back the appliance repair business and told them I had another problem. They could fix that too. My friend came over and we ordered Chinese.
