I have spent my fair share of time in hospitals and doctors' offices. It's really unfair actually. From the time I was young, I was constantly in and out of various hospitals and under the care of too many doctors to remember. I was always the one in the hospital bed, so until recently, I was unaware of how ridiculously uncomfortable some healthcare furniture can be! I was waiting to be picked up at a hospital a few weeks ago. I had been in surgery earlier and needed someone to check me out of the hospital. After a few hours (my ride was at work) they decided they could let me out of the bed and sit me down in what I called a "holding tank" downstairs. I had a nurse accompany me so that if I needed anything I'd have someone with me. I sat, for a few hours, in remarkably uncomfortable chairs shifting here there and everywhere in the awkward, ugly waiting room furniture. My nurse "guard" actually fell asleep in one of these awful excuses for chairs. I have no idea how she did it. Then I remembered all of the other times I had friends or family stay with me in the hospital. The times I saw loved ones asleep in those ridiculous chairs were too numerous to count. They never complained though. Much to their credit. As I sat there a custodian came in. As he was the only thing moving or doing anything remotely interesting in this entire room (and because I was still under the effects of anesthesia,) I watched him. He fiddled with some light fixtures, and fitted winter screens on the windows. Then, he wheeled in a huge box. I watched with anticipation and saw him pull out a huge, overstuffed, brown microfiber armchair. Or at least that's what it looked like. In reality, what I was seeing was a new wave in healthcare furniture. This chair was smaller than a regular armchair and a little stiffer than it appeared. (Yes, I sat in it.) But it was without a doubt, more comfortable than any of the other chairs in the room. I hope that I never have to stay in the hospital again in my life but I know that probably won't be the case. However, I can rest a little easier now that I know the waiting room furniture is more comfortable for my loved ones.
