Unique Furniture Stores Create Equally Unique Living Spaces

Your home is your personal space where you feel most comfortable. You want it to reflect both your personal tastes and your personality. It should be a reflection of you essentially. But if each of us truly is unique like a snowflake, then shouldn't your home be one-of-a-kind? No one wants it to look straight out of a showroom nor do we all want the same furniture that everyone else owns.

The way to combat mediocrity is to avoid big name department stores. Major stores means major overkill. Everyone will have that same bedroom dresser and sofa. Sure you'll probably get a great price on it, but it's all the same. There is nothing special or personal about it. That's not to say your home won't at least look fashionable, but it might not stand out as much as you think.

The real key to finding unique furniture is to go into smaller shops and boutiques. You'll find quite a selection of interesting stores when you shop in major cities. These shops might carry furniture that is 100% custom made or just handcrafted by the owner. Furniture is not mass produced on an assembly line and thrown in a box. No, the owner is in the back room sanding the wood himself. Each piece will always be different, offering slight variations. He might have two nightstands but the grain of wood is noticeably distinct from the other. And it's these variations that draw us to each piece.

Search in vintage furniture stores for older pieces still in good condition. Vintage is always cool, always in style even though it's technically not. Although a piece might look dated, it can still mesh well with newly created furniture. Just make sure it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. It still needs to match!

But if you can't find furniture that speaks so clearly to you, place your focus on colorful accessories and accent furniture. A lamp from Thailand, a rug from South America, and ottoman from China, these items will most certainly stand out. Accessories that you don't find everyday are the ones that will make for the perfect conversation starters. They're fun and interesting and they can easily reflect your quirky tastes.

Home design and decoration don't have to be daunting tasks as long as you know where to look. Walk down the road less traveled every once in awhile and you'll be surprised at the unique furniture you can find. The goal is to find furniture and accessories that tell a story. Those are the most interesting ones.
