It's incredible to think that it wasn't too long ago before real labor laws came into place. Up to and during the time of the Industrial Revolution, working eleven to fifteen hours a day was commonplace. It also wasn't uncommon for small children to be working in factories to bring in extra income. Working conditions were terrible and it didn't take much for someone to lose a finger, or a hand, quite literally. Unsafe practices were still occurring in the 1900s, spawning Upton Sinclair's famous novel The Jungle. Although meant to be more political in nature about the unfair treatment of workers, it ended up becoming more of a campaign for vegetarianism.
Thankfully today the government is fairly good at regulating companies and factories, making sure that every business instills safe working conditions. Labor laws have been put in place to protect not only the workers, but the consumers purchasing these products. Consumers want to know that their foods are being made in clean and sanitary environments, that products are made with quality materials and will not fall apart at the drop of a hat.
It all starts with the company itself. Trustworthy and smart businessmen will maintain the factories run smoothly, machines work properly, and all work laws are followed correctly. When you create a safe working environment, you ultimately create a better and happier place for employees. It's almost like a domino effect where everything falls into place. If workers feel uncomfortable, if management is mistreating employees or abusing power, morale will plummet. Some will dread coming to work everyday and potentially not put in their best efforts. Others will take a stand and before you know it, a labor dispute will rear its ugly head.
Labor disputes create problems for everyone. You have workers on strike, products not being made, and ultimately money being lost. And let's not forget the stain on the company. No matter which side is right and which is wrong, it's going to be bad for everyone. A messy lawsuit is one stain that won't wash out so easily. It can take years to rebuild a company's reputation.
When companies play by the rules and don't try to cut corners, business tends to run a bit smoother. Of course there will always be those who get away with it, but why risk it? Why put your hardworking employees through that? It's much easier to create a safe working environment where employees will be happy to come to work and will show their appreciation through hard work and dedication towards the company.
